The City of Brechin Pipe Band
The band’s history can be traced back to a meeting of the Brechin Town Council on the 20th June 1688, where entered in the minutes, John Wyslie was elected town piper. The Pipe band was then formed from a volunteer detachment in 1884. The current constitution was drawn up by Brechin Town Council in 1950, giving the band its name “The City of Brechin Pipe band”. The band’s membership has a varied age span ranging from school age members up to 55 years, with volunteers from as far north as Stonehaven down to Dundee in the south. The town pipes are handed down to be used by the elected pipe major, who is currently Craig Black. The Pipe band has been very successful elevating its status from Grade 4B in 1998 to its present level of Grade 4A where in Belgium, at the European Championships, it achieved 4th place at Grade A level. The highlight of the band’s 2004 year was their invitation to play for HRH The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh on their visit to Forfar and Kirriemuir. Scotland’s Countryside Festival would like to take this opportunity to thank the City of Brechin Pipe band for making time in their very busy schedule to attend our event , giving it a truly Scottish flavour. Should you wish to take home a souvenir from the band you may purchase a CD called “A Lang Time Comin” directly from the band and enjoy their music at your leisure.
